Building Bridges with Bricks

In the heart of Yuen Long, within the vibrant halls of a local secondary school, something magical happened last week. We moved away from the traditional "chalk and talk" method and invited a group of parents and students to sit down, open a bag of colourful bricks, and start building their
future.
Education in Hong Kong is often seen as a race, but at SENSE Education, we believe it’s a journey of self-discovery. Our recent 3-hour workshop focused on identifying unique learning styles through the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) methodology, proving that when we play, we learn—and when we build, we understand.
The Challenge: Visualising the "Invisible"
Why do some students thrive in lectures while others need to move around? Why do some find diagrams helpful while others prefer stories?
These are learning styles (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, and more), but they are often invisible to the students themselves—and frustratingly hidden from their parents.
Our workshop broke these barriers. Using the 10-brick challenge and the "Duck Mania" exercise, we warmed up the creative muscles of the participants. The atmosphere shifted from initial shyness to a hum of focused energy. Parents weren't just watching; they were building alongside their children.
Inspiring Moment: The "Support" Model
One father built a LEGO bridge. To him, it represented the gap between his expectations and his daughter's reality. By adding a small orange brick in the middle, he explained: "This is the support she needs from me, not just the pressure to cross the bridge." It was a breakthrough moment that no verbal conversation had ever achieved.
Core Learning Outcomes: Beyond the Bricks
The workshop was meticulously designed to deliver tangible growth in three areas:
Deep Self-Awareness
Students in the Hong Kong often face high academic pressure. By identifying their primary learning mode—whether they are "Social Learners" who need discussion or "Solitary Learners" who need quiet reflection—they gained a sense of agency over their education. They stopped feeling "slow" and started feeling "different."
Parent-Child Synchronisation
We often see a "communication vacuum" in busy Hong Kong households. Through model sharing, parents "saw" their children’s learning hurdles. The bricks acted as a neutral third party, lowering defenses and allowing for honest reflection on daily study habits and satisfaction levels.
Prototyping Success
The final task was to build a "Learning Magic Tool." This wasn't just a toy; it was a prototype of a new study habit. One student built a "Time Shield" to protect her focus, while another built a "Knowledge Tree" to organise his visual notes. They didn't just leave with ideas; they left with 3D blueprints for success.

Why LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® for Schools?
Traditional counseling and career guidance can sometimes feel like an interrogation. LSP flips the script. It uses hand-brain connection to unlock knowledge that we didn't know we had. It is particularly effective for the Hong Kong curriculum, where creative problem-solving and emotional intelligence (EQ) are becoming as vital as exam results.
Educational Innovation in NT West
As we expand our reach across the Hong Kong and the rest of Asia, SENSE Education is committed to bringing global methodologies like Pro.Play® and CliftonStrengths® to local schools. We aren't just teaching; we are transforming talents into change-makers.
